Installation

Recording choir: The Greeners’ Sound

Every Small Sky 《すべての小さな空》is an installation based on the memory of myself with The Greeners’s Sound performing the song, Small Sky, in our tour to Japan in 2018.

As a choir, the voices of the singers are intimately interwoven. For this installation, I recorded each member singing their parts of Small Sky individually. As the viewers walk among the loudspeakers, they have the opportunity to experience our members’ voices individually, or harmonized together as a choir.

The song Small Sky is meaningful to me. Sometimes when I look up at the sky, the azure sky reminds me of the precious memories of us singing together; this song resounds in my head. With music, we are synchronized. Our experiences and memories of singing together perpetuate in the same sky we are sharing, and support us in highs and lows. The lyrics to Toru Takemitsu’s Small Sky go as follows:
青空みたら
綿のような雲が
悲しみをのせて
飛んでいった

(Refrain)
いたずらが過ぎて
叱られて泣いた こどもの頃を憶いだした

夕空みたら
教會の窓の
ステンドグラスが
真赤に燃えてた

夜空をみたら
小さな星が
涙のように
光っていた
I looked up at the blue sky.
Clouds like cotton wool
flew by
carrying sorrow.

(Refrain)
I recalled my childhood
when I was scolded for my mischief
and I cried.

I looked up at the evening sky.
Stained glass windows
in a church
burned deep red.

I looked up at the night sky.
A tiny star
glimmered
like a tear drop.
